Traditional Fall Family Activities to Embrace Autumn

Autumn is the perfect time of year to get out and explore all the fall activities for the family that this short season has to offer! There are so many amazing things to do in the fall and the weather is still warm enough to get out there and enjoy them all!

Make sure to pick your favourites and enjoy as many as you can before this season comes to an end! All of these fall activities are perfect for the whole family and are a great way to start family traditions that you’ll look forward to year after year!

Apple orchard

Checking out an apple orchard is so much fun for the whole family. The kids can learn how to pick apples and fill up their own baskets to take home and enjoy. Kids are free to roam around outside and take in the fresh fall air.

Many apple orchards often have fall family activities, like tractor rides, farm animals, and play structures. Depending on the activities at the orchard you can plan to spend a few hours picking and playing outdoors!

Don’t forget you’ll need some recipes for all of the apples you brought home! These are so delicious, you might have to make a second trip to the orchard!

Hayrides

Everyone loves a good old-fashioned hayride! Whether this is part of a local farm, an orchard, petting zoo, or pioneer village. Hayrides are a fun and festive way to bundle up and enjoy the view of all of the great fall foliage and scenery.

Whether this is horse or tractor pulled, hayrides are a must do for the whole family!

Pumpkin patch

A trip to the pumpkin patch is the perfect way to grab some natural fall décor or for everyone to pick out their own pumpkins for jack-o-lanterns, while supporting your local farmers!

A lot of pumpkin patches also host fall and hallowe’en themed activities. Some do daytime hours for younger families and after dark for brave souls who want to get into the hallowe’en spirit!

Make sure to pick up some small sweet pie pumpkins and make your own pumpkin purée at home! Try some of these recipes that feature pumpkin for some homemade festive baking!

Fall Farmer’s Markets

Fall is harvest season! Get a bounty of fresh local produce at a farmer’s market. These markets often also host local artisans where you can pick up handmade décor, homemade soaps, and baking to name a few! Get out and support your local famers and artisans. It is so much more fun than going to the grocery store or ordering online!

Fall Fairs and Festivals

Most fairs take place in the fall. The perfect fall family activity that you could easily spend the whole day at! Fall fairs are full of rides, games, performers, and animals. Something for everyone!

We have quite a few festivals that take place during the fall and love attending some of them year after year! Festivals are a fun family tradition that everyone looks forward to.

Pumpkinferno is an elaborate pumpkin festival full of fall family activities for young and old. Oktoberfest is also a popular festival that takes place in fall! Check to see what local festivals are taking place where you live!

Carving or Painting Pumpkins

A classic activity I’m sure most people have taken part in! Don’t forget to save some of the seeds for roasting afterwards!. If you have some littler kids at home, try pumpkin painting.

Get as elaborate as you want with this activity, make a classic jack-o-lantern or create an intricately carved pumpkin sculpture.

Have a pumpkin carving competition or host a pumpkin carving party!

Corn Maze

You might find a corn maze as part of of a pumpkin patch or even an apple orchard. The corn maze is a classic fall family activity to test your memory and directional skills. These can range in skill level and become extremely elaborate!

Build a Scarecrow

As part of your outdoor fall décor, try your hand at building a scarecrow! If you don’t have any old clothes, take a trip to a second hand store and choose your own scarecrows wardrobe. All you need is some straw for the stuffing.

Cozy Seasonal baking

Not only does this taste amazing, it makes the whole house smell of warm holiday spices and fresh baked treats! Fall baking often features pumpkin, squash, apples, and warm spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger.

Get the family involved and make a day of baking up some fun and festive treats. Share some with friends and neighbours and spread the autumn love with everyone!
