Topping alternatives for maple sweet potato casserole

Although, arguably, marshmallows are the most popular topping for sweet potato casserole, there are an array of delicious toppings you might want to try or mix in with the marshmallows! Here are some of our favourites!

Sweet Pecans (or other nuts)

Make a crumble topping with ½ cup (75 g) of flour mixed with ½ cup (100 g) of brown sugar, a pinch of salt, and 1/3 cup (80 ml) of melted butter. Mix until moistened. Then toss in 1 cup (100 g) of pecans.

Crisp oatmeal topping

This is the same type of topping you would find on fruit crisps like apple crisp. To make this easy topping crumble together ½ cup (100 g) brown sugar, ½ cup (75 g) flour, ½ cup (50 g) quick oats, 3 Tablespoons (45 ml) melted butter.

Dried stuffing

Boxed stuffing is really just a box of dried cubed and seasoned bread. Crush the dried bread into crumbs and layer on top of the casserole for an extra flavourful crispy topping.

Homemade Bread

If you have bread at home that is past it’s prime, cut it into cubes and dry it out in a 200 °F (95 °C) oven for about 1 hour or until dried and crumbly. Crush the bread into crumbs and layer that on top of the casserole.

Packaged bread crumbs

Buy store bough prepackaged bread crumbs from the store for the quickest and easiest way to top this casserole dish.

Crackers

Try crushing crackers and using in place of bread crumbs. No drying required! Butter crackers like Ritz are a perfect choice for this casserole or pair with a cheesy cracker for even more flavour. Drizzle with butter before placing in the oven.

Crumbled chips

Crunched up plain flavoured chips on top. They stay crisp and give the casserole a great savoury flavour.

Crispy chow mein noodles

Whole or broken up this is a great alternative to top this casserole.

Cereal

Give a quick crumble to cereal like Corn Flakes for the perfect quick and easy crunchy topping. Make sure to drizzle with a few Tablespoons of melted butter before baking.
