Why is it called Salisbury steak?
Salisbury steak was named after Dr. James H. Salisbury, a physician who promoted ground beef as part of a healthy diet in the late 1800s. It then gained it’s popularity when it appeared in TV dinners.
Can I make Salisbury steak ahead of time?
Yes! You can prepare the patties a day ahead and refrigerate them until ready to cook.
Can Salisbury steak be frozen?
Absolutely. Freeze the cooked patties and gravy together for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
What can I serve with Salisbury steak?
Some classic pairings include:
- Mashed potatoes
- Buttered egg noodles
- Rice
- Green beans
- Roasted carrots
- Peas
- Corn
- Dinner rolls
- Garden salad

Ingredient Substitutions
- Ground turkey, pork, or chicken instead of beef
- Cornstarch instead of flour for the gravy
Expert Tips
- Don’t overmix the meat or the patties can become tough.
- Chill the patties for 15–20 minutes before cooking to help them hold their shape.
- Brown the patties well before adding the gravy for deeper flavor.
- Deglaze the pan with a splash of beef broth to capture all the flavourful browned bits.
- Let the gravy simmer until it thickens and the flour cooks.
- Taste the gravy before serving and adjust the seasoning if needed.

How to Store Homemade Salisbury Steak
Homemade Salisbury steak is a wonderful make-ahead meal, and the rich mushroom gravy helps keep the beef patties tender and flavourful when stored properly.
Refrigerator
Allow the Salisbury steak and gravy to cool to room temperature before transferring them to an airtight container. Store the patties with the gravy to help prevent them from drying out. Properly stored, homemade Salisbury steak will keep in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
Freezer
Salisbury steak freezes beautifully, making it a great option for meal prep. Place the cooled patties and gravy in a freezer-safe container. Freeze for up to 3 months for the best quality.
To serve, thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
Reheating
For the best texture, reheat Salisbury steak gently on the stovetop over medium-low heat until the patties are heated through and the gravy is bubbling.
You can also reheat individual portions in the microwave. Cover loosely and heat in 30-second intervals, stirring the gravy between each interval until warmed through.

Ingredients
Ground beef – Formed into hamburger-style patties to make each steak.
Onion – To flavour the steaks and the gravy.
Ground clove – Flavour.
Chili flakes – Flavour and spice.
Egg – To bind the patties together.
Salt and pepper – To taste.

For the steaks

- Grate or finely dice 1/4 of an onion and add to the bowl.
- Mix together with your hands, just until everything is evenly distributed.

6. Add about 2 Tablespoons of oil to the pan and fry the patties. You will have to do this step in batches. Make sure to not over crowed the pan.
7. Cook about 6 minutes on each side or until each side is browned and the beef is cooked through and there is no pink left.
8. Remove the cooked steaks to a plate and continue cooking the rest of the meat.
For the Gravy
- To the same skillet, add in 1/2 a diced onion and 1 pound of sliced mushrooms.

3. Add in 1/4 cup of all-purpose flour. Stir until the flour is absorbed.
4. Stir in 3 cups of beef stock.
5. Stir in 2 Tablespoons of tomato paste until you have a smooth sauce.
6. Stir occasionally, until the gravy comes to a simmer and is thickened.
7. Add salt and pepper to your taste.
