Kale chips are a great way to satisfy your snack craving without reaching for a bag of store bought chips. Plus, they are lighter and healthier.

Kale chips with nutritional yeast only need 4 ingredients, a bowl, and a baking sheet. Which means you can prep these in just a few minutes. I love making large batches to have a quick and easy snack on hand.

Why we love kale

Are kale chips healthy? Kale chips are nutrient dense and light on calories when compared to alternatives like potato chips.

For this kale chip recipe, we are using olive oil to lightly coat the kale. Which is a great swap out for the normal trans-fat that is found in bagged potato chip or other similar snacks.

Kale either raw, cooked, or baked is a great source of antioxidants, vitamins A, K, and C. It is also packed with fibre. A delicious dark leafy green that is a plant powerhouse of nutrition.

Are kale chips keto

Yes! Kale chips with nutritional yeast are a great snack you can make if you are following a keto lifestyle. This snack also works for vegan, vegetarian, and people following a gluten-free lifestyle.

Kale chips with nutritional yeast variations

While our favourite way of making these veggie chips is with a light sprinkle of salt and nutritional yeast, you might want to give other seasonings a try.

Some great kale chip seasonings are,

  • taco seasoning
  • sea salt
  • any popcorn seasoning
  • salt and vinegar (Mix with 1 Tablespoon vinegar and 1 teaspoon salt before baking)
  • Garlic powder
  • hot sauce
  • Store bought seasoning blends

Which kale is best for kale chips

I have made this recipe with flat leaf lacinato and curly kale. Both work great and have a lovely crisp and crunchy texture with very similar flavour.

Curly leaf kale has a slightly more satisfying texture from the crispy, curly ruffled edges that hold onto the nutritional yeast and get a lovely light and crispy texture.

Whichever kale you have will work for this recipe.

What is nutritional yeast?

If you have not used nutritional yeast before, it is sold as powdery, yellow flakes of deactivated yeast. It is often used to simulate a cheesy flavour while still being low in calories and sodium. It is also a great gluten-free, sugar-free, fat-free, vegetarian, and vegan option.

Ingredients

Kale – Flat leaf or curly varieties will work for this recipe. For quick and easy chips, use a bag of pre-washed and cut kale.
Olive oil – A very light coating of oil is all that is needed for this recipe.
Salt – Mixed into the kale before baking, the salt will stick to the leaves as it bakes with the oil.
Nutritional yeast – For a savoury cheese-like flavour.
