How to make a cozy fall home

By Rebecca St. Clair

Autumn is the favourite season of so many people, and, for me anyways, it is the shortest season. So making a cozy fall home is so important to getting the most enjoyment out of this gorgeous autumnal time of year.

Candles and pumpkins in a dimly lit room

Fall is the time of year when the garden is abundantly ready for harvest! Things like pumpkin, squash, and corn are all in their glory in this part of the world, which is probably why they feature in so much fall décor!

Start off with a clean slate

The most important part of decorating for any season is cleaning and downsizing what you already have. Adding more on top of what you already have looks like a cluttered mess.

Take the time to remove any unnecessary clutter and downsize what is no longer in use. Starting off with a clean slate will showcase your fall décor and accentuate the autumnal vibe in your space.

Blankets and layering textures for a cozy fall home

One of the easiest ways to bing that cozy feeling into your space is with soft warm blankets. But wait! Don’t just start throwing blankets around, choose a colour scheme and stick to it or the space will feel chaotic.

Having a very limited colour pallet in your cozy fall home will allow you to mix and match with textures, to give a cozy harmonious feel.

Lighting for a cozy fall home

This is one of the most important things that is often overlooked when it comes to creating a cozy fall home. This season sees a change in the amount of sunlight that we get and, as the days start to grow shorter, we have more time in the evening when lighting in the home is essential.

Soft lights, table lamps, floor lamps, and candles are all ideal choices that make your home immediately feel cozy and warm. The use of the correct lighting changes the whole feel of the room. Bright overhead lighting is much too harsh. Invest in some soft lamps or dimmers for a soft cozy vibe.

Warm drink station

This season is all about warm drinks and pumpkin spice! Setting up an easy DIY home drink station is a fun and affordable way to bring a cozy fall feeling into your home! Dedicate a small area in the kitchen. Fill it with your favourite warm drinks and accessories.

This can include apple cider, hot chocolate, coffee, and tea. Pumpkin pie spice, drink flavouring, marshmallows, cinnamon. Some fun and festive fall mugs are a fun and functional way to add whimsy to this cozy drink station!

Make it accessible so even the little guys can customize their drinks. Make it feel like a special occasion. Like a cozy coffee shop in your own home!

This is the time for warm comfort food dinners and recipes with seasonal produce that is in abundance in your area.

Pumpkin and squash are versatile for sweet and savoury dishes. Warm and cozy soups are not only easy to make but can be made in big batches for easy leftovers!

Fall is all about warm vibrant colour! The changing of the leaves, the bright orange pumpkins, and colourful squash. These warm colours help bring warmth and colour into our homes. Bringing the colour of the natural environment into the home will transform your home to a cozy fall paradise.

Try shades of orange, brown, red, blue, or green. Stick to one main colour scheme throughout your home. This will give a cohesive soothing look.

Decorate with natural elements

Fall decorating doesn’t have to be elaborate or expensive. I love decorating with natural elements. These are easy to find and most of them are completely free, especially if you grow them yourself!
