What Makes These Granola Bars Naturally Sweet?
Instead of using refined sugar, this recipe gets most of its sweetness from dates and applesauce.
Dates are naturally sweet and have a soft, sticky texture when puréed, which makes them especially perfect for homemade snack bars. Applesauce adds moisture and a gentle fruity sweetness while also helping bring the ingredients together.
Why use dates?
Dates are the perfect addition to homemade granola bars,
- Naturally sweet
- Soft and sticky
- Easy to blend
- Full of fiber
- Delicious with oats, cinnamon, apples, and dried fruit
If you’ve ever wondered how to make granola bars stick together without corn syrup, dates my favourite choice.

How Do You Make Granola Bars Without Refined Sugar?
The dates provide sweetness and stickiness, while the applesauce contributes moisture and helps bind everything together. Oats provide the hearty base, and then you can add whatever flavors your family loves.
The most important thing is to press the mixture firmly into the pan before baking. This helps the ingredients hold together once the bars are cut.

Ingredients
Rolled oats – Gives the bars their hearty texture and structure.
Dates – Use pitted dates or remove the pits yourself before processing.
Applesauce – Use unsweetened applesauce.
Spices – I used cinnamon
Salt – To balance the sweetness.
Vanilla – Flavour.
Mix-ins – I used dried cranberries, shredded coconut, pumpkin seeds, and mini chocolate chips.

How to Keep Granola Bars From Falling Apart
This is one of the most common questions when making homemade granola bars.
The key is moisture + binding + pressure.
Make sure the dates are soft
Very dry dates won’t bind as well. If your dates are particularly firm, soak them in hot water for a few minutes, drain, and then purée them.
Don’t add too many dry ingredients
It can be tempting to load your granola bars with every delicious mix-in in the cupboard! But too many dry ingredients can make the mixture crumbly.
Press the mixture firmly
Once your mixture is in the pan, use the bottom of a measuring cup, a spatula, or a piece of parchment paper to really compress the mixture.
The more firmly it’s packed, the better your bars will hold together.
Let them cool completely
Don’t rush to cut your homemade granola bars while they’re still warm.
They become firmer as they cool, so give them plenty of time to set before slicing.

How to Make Chewy Granola Bars
For a soft and chewy homemade granola bar, avoid overbaking.
You want the bars to become firm enough to hold their shape without drying out.
The applesauce and dates help retain moisture, giving these bars a naturally chewy texture.
Can You Make These Granola Bars Gluten-Free?
Yes, this recipe is naturally gluten-free if you are sensitive to gluten make sure you are using certified gluten-free oats, and none of your mix-ins contain gluten.
While oats are naturally gluten-free, regular oats can sometimes come into contact with wheat during growing, processing, or packaging. Always check the labels of your other ingredients as well.

Are These Granola Bars Nut-Free?
Yes, this recipe is designed to be nut-free and peanut-free. While many granola bar rely on peanut butter or nut butters to bind the ingredients together, this one uses a mixture of dates and applesauce.
That makes these homemade granola bars a useful option for families who want a snack without peanuts or tree nuts.
However, always check the labels of packaged ingredients such as oats, chocolate chips, coconut, and dried fruit for possible allergen contamination.

Can I Use Different Types of Oats?
I used Old-fashioned rolled oats because they give the bars a hearty, chewy texture.
Quick oats can also work, but they’ll produce a softer and less textured granola bar.
Steal cut oats, or oat groats require a longer cooking time, so they are not a great choice for granola bars.
How to Store Homemade Granola Bars
Once completely cooled and cut, store the bars in an airtight container.
Place parchment paper between layers if you don’t want them sticking together.
For the best texture, keep them at room temperature for several days. If your kitchen is particularly warm or any of your mix-ins require refrigeration, store them in the refrigerator instead.
You can also freeze homemade granola bars for longer storage.
To freeze:
- Allow the bars to cool completely.
- Cut them into individual portions.
- Wrap each bar in parchment paper.
- Place them in a freezer-safe container or freezer bag.
- Freeze for up to about 3 months for best quality.
Let a frozen granola bar thaw in the refrigerator or at room temperature before eating.

Are Homemade Granola Bars Healthy?
These homemade granola bars can be a wholesome snack option, particularly because you’re able to control the ingredients and sweetness.
They’re made with oats, dates, applesauce, and your choice of nutritious mix-ins rather than relying on refined sugar or highly processed ingredients.
For an even more satisfying snack, pair a granola bar with Greek yogurt, cheese, fruit, or crumble on top of a smoothie bowl.
Can I Make These Granola Bars Ahead?
Absolutely!
I make these bars for the week ahead to keep some healthy and filling snacks on hand through the week.
Then they’re ready for:
- School lunches
- Afternoon snacks
- Road trips
- Hiking
- Picnics
- Camping
- After-school snacks
- Busy mornings
They’re especially handy when you want something homemade without having to cook every single day.
